  • Adam Goss, Principal UX Designer at iRobot
  • Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 6:30pm
  • at iRobot in the  Spirit & Opportunity Room at iRobot Headquarters, 8 Crosby Dr, Bedford MA
  • Please register. It helps us and our hosts plan.

Abstract

Robots do amazing things on their own. In most cases, this is where their capabilities shine. They:

  • Clean floors in the home
  • Handle hazardous materials in industry
  • Locate mines on the battlefield
  • Monitor environs autonomously and remotely

But what about when users interact with robots to accomplish a goal? Apps that allow remote control of complex robots require unique considerations around control and feedback.
Adam Goss will share his learnings from a multi-year effort to normalize the user experience across the entire line of Defense & Security products. He will discuss the challenges involved in designing for different types of feedback loops in robotics (open loops, closed loops, and latency). He will also discuss controlling Defense & Security robots (PackBot et al) with the iRobot uPoint Multi-robot Controller system.
This will be followed by:

  • A Q&A session
  • Hands-on demonstrations of robotic products
    • for the home (Roomba)
    • defense & security (FirstLook, PackBot, SUGV)
    • remote presence (Ava 500)
  • Visits to the iRobot museum, 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Laziness in the Time of Responsive Design

Meeting date: June 9 – 6:30PM

ethanMarcotte
  • Ethan Marcotte will discuss responsive design and how to do more with less
  • Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at 6:30pm
  • IBM Research Cambridge, 1 Rogers St, Cambridge, MA 02142

Abstract

As screens and input types evolve, we’re managing more complexity in our designs than ever before: our layouts are becoming more flexible and responsive; our interfaces, more immersive. Maybe we can look for simpler approaches? In this session, Ethan—a singularly lazy person—will walk through some responsive designs, and show how we might do a lot more with a little bit less.
